Cosmetic Products - Safety Regulations

Safety Labels

After finding the official legal document provided by the government on there cosmetic laws in the UK I was able to get a better understanding of what my packaging must include. This was informative because I do know that there has to be correct labels on packaging so that the consumer can see if they want to use it but I didn't know know enough to create my own packaging that applies with the law.

I realised that the main Legal requirements are ...

1) All products should show on there packaging the correct labelling requirements. They have to comply with the law other wise they will be shut down.

2) All cosmetic movement should be recorded between retailers and records will be checked within a three year period, so the company's must provide the correct paperwork for ever sale or perches to prove the authenticity of the cosmetics.

3) The distributors should provide due care when selling on there products. This means that they should keep track of product lifeline as cosmetic products do have timelines from when they go off and they shouldn't be keeped in storage for there lifetime then be sold.

4) Lastly, the products shouldn't be sold without labelling showing  the ingredient list as well as stating alleges. The batch and manufacturing reference number must be displayed on the sold product. Other information that should be included is addresses and contact detail's for help lines and inquiries for consumers. They are needed incase a person has a question or message for the retailers of the products.

After my research into the laws I have realised what parts apply to me as a packaging designer as the whole of the regulations act is detailed in every part of the cosmetic industry.

- I will need to state the ingredient list and any posable allergic reactions.
- Product lifespan.
- The product weight.
- Manufactory details like factory and country it was made and where it was shipped into the EU to if it was manufactured outside the EU.
- A batch number of manufacture, or other reference for identifying the goods (this may be on packaging only if the product is too small to accommodate it).
- If the product shouldn't be used around a certain age group or body part then it should be stated as a warning on the product or packaging.

I have annotated this example of a cosmetic product label. This shows what I am talking about showing what is needed when selling a cosmetic product. The one thing that I couldn't see was a use by date or product lifespan but that could of been of the front of the product.
